Maruti Suzuki has resumed production at its Manesar and Gurgaon plants on Monday. The production was stopped after a fire broke out in Subros Limited’s Manesar plant which chiefly supplies air-conditioning units to Maruti and many other manufacturers.

Maruti’s formal statement on the issue said: “The maintenance closure had been advanced by three weeks to June 6-11, following a fire at the Manesar facilities of its supplier, Subros Limited, on May 29.” It added, “Due to the strenuous efforts made by all concerned, operations at MSIL’s facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar have begun smoothly.”

Subros is one of the leading manufacturers of thermal products for cars and commercial vehicles in India with an annual capacity of 1.5 million AC kit units. Apart from Maruti Subros also caters to Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Force Motors, Renault and Nissan, but since Maruti sources 60 per cent of its cars via Subros, it was the worst affected one.

Subros and Maruti were jointly assessing the damage caused and as per reports, the fire was caused by a blast in a moulding machine, which damaged the computers and machines in the facility. The blast also caused one of the towers to collapse in the plant.

Both the Manesar and Gurgaon plant produce about 5,500 vehicles in a day, which includes cars like the Vitara Brezza, Baleno, Swift, and Dzire, all of which are already in waiting periods ranging from four to seven months. So, resuming production at the earliest was of immense importance for the company.
