Catering to the increased demand of automatic cars in India, Mahindra has launched an even affordable two-pedal variant of their SUV-the XUV5OO in W6 trim at Rs 14.29 Lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai). The XUV5OO was launched with an automatic gearbox last year by the Indian carmaker in three trims- W8 FWD (front-wheel-drive) and the top-end W10 FWD (front-wheel-drive) and W10 AWD (all-wheel-drive).

Speaking on the introduction of the automatic transmission in the XUV500 W6 FWD variant, Vivek Nayer, Chief Marketing Officer, automotive division, M&M Ltd. said, "The automatic transmission of the new age XUV500 has resonated very well with our customers since we launched it in November 2015. I am sure that the availability of the automatic transmission across variants and a range of price points will now render this technology more accessible to a larger base of customers and make the XUV500 a more attractive proposition amongst a wide spectrum of buyers.”

Under the hood of the XUV500 is Mahindra’s much-famed 2.2-litre ‘mHawk’ engine. It produces 142PS of power along with 330Nm of torque. Taking care of the transmission duty in the automatic variants of this SUV is a 6-speed, torque-converter automatic gearbox. This gearbox has been sourced from AISIN Japan by the Indian carmaker and is also used in the Ssanyong Tivoli which was showcased at this year’s auto expo by Mahindra.

Safety wise, the Mahindra XUV500 W6 automatic only gets front two airbags and ABS. It will miss out on certain features like side curtain airbags, ESP with rollover mitigation, Hill hold and Hill descent control.

It also misses out on creature comforts like an electric sunroof, logo projection lamps on ORVMs, keyless entry, start-stop button, voice messaging system and a few more.
