Mahindra will be equipping only the 2.2-litre diesel engine of the Scorpio with Intelli-Hybrid system for now

Mahindra & Mahindra, perhaps India's most popular utility vehicle maker, is mulling to fit a new mild hybrid system on its popular SUV, the Scorpio. According to a few reports, the system will be called the Intelli-Hybrid system and it is likely to be launched soon. The Intelli-Hybrid system will help the Scorpio's engine while driving and will have brake energy recuperation, a larger capacity battery, and an integrated starter motor. The starter motor will also charge the battery, if the reports are to be believed.

The Scorpio comes with a 2.2-litre diesel engine and only this engine will be equipped with the mild hybrid system for now. While this is a nice move on Mahindra's part, buyers in Delhi-NCR will not be able to buy this Scorpio variant due to the ongoing diesel car ban. Mahindra & Mahindra is the one of the worst-affected vehicle makers in India due to the ban on registration of diesel vehicles over 2000cc in Delhi-NCR.

That's not all, though. Reportedly, Mahindra is also mulling over putting a 2.2-litre petrol engine in the Scorpio. The reports also suggest that this petrol motor may find its way to the XUV500 as well. Currently, the Scorpio and the XUV500 are sold with 2.2-litre diesel engines across India. Both cars also come with a 1.99-litre diesel unit for sale in Delhi-NCR. Further reports suggest Mahindra to be developing more petrol engines.
