The South-Korea based company, now owned by Mahindra & Mahindra, has recalled the Rexton for a possible fault in the rear driveshaft (India only).

Ever since the auto industry body, SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers), instated voluntary vehicle recalls for safety-related issues in July 2012, over two million automobiles have been recalled by various car manufacturers in India. Now, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M)-owned SsangYong is recalling the Rexton in India for a possible fault in the rear driveshaft. The recall is to check whether there is any loss of torque from the engine. Although the Rexton is an all-wheel--drive car, any loss of torque can potentially hamper the driving dynamics of the car.

In a BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) filing, M&M said, “The inspection and subsequent rectification will be carried out free of cost for all Rexton customers, who will be individually contacted by the company. As an endeavour to ensure a hassle-free experience for its customers, the company is proactively carrying out this activity. This action is also in compliance with SIAM's voluntary code on vehicle recall.”

Rexton was launched in India in October 2012 and was the first vehicle to find its way into Indian roads after homegrown automobile manufacturer Mahindra took over the South Korean car firm. Currently, the Rexton is available in three variants – the RX5 MT, the RX6 MT TOD (torque on demand) and the RX7 AT AWD (all-wheel drive). All three variants get the same 2.7-litre diesel motors but while the RX7 churns out 186.5PS with 402Nm of torque, the RX6 and the RX5 variants have to make do with 164PS of power and 340Nm of torque.

The next-gen Rexton will make its debut at the upcoming 2016 Paris Motor Show in October. The new car will get an all-new ladder frame chassis and a design overhaul. In India, it will go up against the likes of the new Ford Endeavour and the upcoming Toyota Fortuner.
