Due to the diesel ban that was instated in Delhi/NCR by the Supreme Court, carmakers started thinking of ways to evade the ban. The Supreme Court banned the sale of all diesel-powered vehicles which had an engine equal to or greater than 2000cc. Mahindra, with its utility vehicles range, was hit hard by the ban and started working on a 1.99-litre engine to evade the ban in Delhi/NCR. In July 2016, while the ban was still active, Mahindra launched its Scorpio SUV with Intelli-Hybrid technology in other parts of the country, sporting a 2.2-litre mHAWK diesel engine.
Today, Mahindra introduced its Scorpio SUV with Intelli-Hybrid technology for the Delhi/NCR market. Mated to a 1.99-litre mHAWK diesel motor, Mahindra claims that the hybrid technology helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 7 per cent. Another incentive of carrying hybrid technology comes in the form of a concessional VAT (value added tax) of 5 per cent for customers in Delhi/NCR. This concession translates to savings of Rs 60,000 to Rs 90,000, depending on the variant purchased.
Speaking about the introduction of the Scorpio with Intelli-Hybrid in Delhi and NCR, Pravin Shah, President & Chief Executive, (Automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, “Intelli-Hybrid demonstrates our commitment to making modern technology more accessible to a wider audience. As an organisation that puts keen emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices, across every process and product, we are delighted to introduce mild-hybrid technology on the Scorpio. By reducing fuel consumption, Intelli-Hybrid helps Scorpio owners contribute towards a cleaner and greener Delhi and NCR”.
The reduction in fuel consumption is achieved by a combination of electric power during acceleration, automatically switching the engine off within 3 seconds of the vehicle being stationary (start-stop feature) and regenerative braking - harnessing energy while braking to charge up the batteries, which in turn help in accelerating the car.
The S4 variant of the Scorpio, sporting a 1.99-litre mHAWK diesel motor and Intelli-Hybrid technology, will have a price tag of Rs 9.35 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Other variants that customers can opt for with the same technology on-board are S4+, S4+ 4WD, S6+, S8, S10 2WD MT and S10 4WD MT.
