In a surprising turn of events at the qualifying session of the last ever 125cc race at Valencia, young Briton Danny Webb, who rides for the Indian owned Mahindra Racing team, will be starting from pole position on the grid for the race tomorrow afternoon

With the Ricardo Tormo Circuit in Valencia experiencing mixed weather conditions and a damp circuit thanks to light showers earlier in the day, lap times during the qualifying session for all the racers dropped by around 4 seconds as compared to the dry practice session in the morning. In the last 10 minutes, the racing line dried up and Webb took full advantage of this to set a qualifying time of 1min 45.898sec, a full four-tenths faster than anyone else could manage. Starting behind Webb on the front row is Luis Rossi of Matteoni Racing in second and Johann Zarco of Avant-AirAsia-Ajo in third.

Webb, who signed on for the newly formed Mahindra Racing team at the beginning of this year, had somewhat of a slow start to the season, but picked up his game as the races went by and scored some good middle-order finishes. Things were beginning to look a little down for the 20-year old racer near the end of this season as he picked up injuries in a couple of crashes and his younger, and less experienced, team-mate at Mahindra Racing, Marcel Schrotter, managed to finish higher than him in a quite a few races.

But while Webb’s performance in the last couple of GPs was noteworthy once again, taking pole position in the last race of the season, in fact the last race of the 125cc class, was a little unexpected. While the race on Sunday will definitely be focused on the battle between championship leader Nicolas Terol who starts from 9th on the grid and Zarco, who trails him by 20 points in the 125cc championship, Webb’s first-class performance in snatching pole should hopefully see him fighting for a top 5 finish. We, for one, all have our fingers crossed.
