Home-grown carmaker Mahindra aims to create the world's most affordable electric SUV.

Mahindra Halo Electric

Ever since Mahindra took control of electric car company Reva, it has launched two fully electric vehicles in India – the e2o hatchback and the e-Verito sedan. Both these cars are set up to produce zero harmful emissions on the move as no fuel is being burnt to worsen the air quality. The engineering is based on an electric motor that draws its juice from a bank of batteries and powers the car’s wheels.

Clearly, Mahindra reckons that electric power is the way to go, and so it has now set on a course to build the world's most affordable electric SUV. It is a similar challenge to when Tata Motors announced its intention to build the world’s least expensive car.

The idea is to combine SUV know-how with that of the Reva's EV (electric vehicle) technology. The compact SUV with an electric powertrain under the hood is codenamed “S107”. After the company mated its only sedan on offer, the Verito, with an electric power set-up to create the e-Verito, this will be its next major project to further strengthen Mahindra's image as an electric carmaker. Mahindra, in a recent event, said that it wants the people of the country to look at the company as an electric car company.

“If anyone is preparing feverishly for a disruptive future of mobility, it is Mahindra,” Group Chairman Anand Mahindra shared with shareholders at the seventieth annual general meeting earlier this month.

The company had recently showcased Halo, an electric sportscar, to demonstrate how serious it is about building a complete fleet of electric cars. Such a fleet in its stable will not only help Mahindra to march on its mission to be “the” electric car marque in India, but also gain valuable presence overseas.

Many carmakers are running their R&D centres overtime to develop electric vehicle technology for the Indian market. Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra have also joined hands to develop certain components for electric and hybrid cars and make them more affordable and accessible for Indian consumers. Ford India dropped out of the alliance as it currently wants to concentrate on bringing a hybrid-electric powertrain option for its compact SUV Ecosport, which it has planned for 2020-21.
