Toyota's luxury division will officially begin its operations in India from tomorrow

Lexus India

It is happening, finally! Lexus will start its India operations from tomorrow with the launch of the Lexus ES sedan, RX SUV and LX SUV.

Updated: Lexus Launches RX Crossover And ES Sedan In India

Toyota had been 'considering' launching the brand in India for a very long time; we first reported this intent way back in 2011. Toyota's step-by-step approach to business has slowed down their plans to set up base in India because of various reasons - ranging from the 2013 India-EU free trade negotiations to the unavailability of diesel powertrains.

The time, however, has finally come; the first Lexus-branded dealerships are being set up in Bengaluru, Delhi, Gurugram and Mumbai. With more dealerships planned in Chandigarh, Chennai and Cochin. The three products which will be used for the initial push have been revealed.

Let's take a brief look at the models Lexus will be launching tomorrow.

Lexus RX450h

The RX series’ mid-sized luxury crossover will be offered in its hybrid version in India. The most stylish of the Lexus range in India, this crossover is targeted at younger buyers looking for an alternative to the Porsche Macan or the Jaguar F-Pace etc. The drivetrain consists of a 3.5-litre V6 petrol, paired with an electric motor for a combined power output of 312PS and 362Nm of peak torque. Power is sent through an eCVT transmission to all four wheels via an intelligent AWD system.

Imagine the Toyota Land Cruiser. Now, add a whole lot of style, tech and luxury and you get the LX. Competition should include the Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz G-Class etc. The company's flagship LX series SUVs will be offered in two variants.

The LX450d will be powered by a 4.5-litre twin-turbocharged V8 diesel motor developing 272PS of maximum power and 650Nm of peak torque. A six-speed transmission and an all-time 4WD system are offered as standard.

The top-of-the-line LX570 is powered by a 5.7-litre naturally-aspirated V8 petrol motor developing 367PS of maximum power and 546Nm of peak torque. An eight-speed transmission and full-time 4WD system with locking centre differential are also on offer.

Lexus ES300h

The only sedan in the company's lineup in India, for now, the ES sedan will also be offered exclusively as a hybrid. It is powered by a 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol motor in conjunction with an electric motor. Combined power output is rated at 205PS, while peak torque developed is 213Nm. Power is sent through a CVT to the front wheels.

Initially, all the units will be brought to India as CBUs (completely built units), and as a result, the prices are expected to be fairly higher than their competition. However, Toyota is eventually expected to start assembling some models in the Lexus lineup from CKD (completely knocked down) kits later.

Stay tuned to ZigWheels for the launch tomorrow.
