The luxury sedan gets a stretch for India, and will be available in the long-wheelbase version only

Mercedes-Benz' first big launch for the year is set to happen tomorrow, with the tenth generation of the E-Class. The saloon will be made available in its 'L' (L = long wheelbase) avatar only, and is likely to be priced between Rs 65 lakh and Rs 75 lakh.

The biggest (or should we say longest?) talking point, is the wheelbase that's stretched by a full 140mm. That bumps up the overall length to 5065mm, which’s substantially more compared to its immediate rivals. Mercedes-Benz makes no qualms about the fact that the new E is best used as a chauffeur-driven vehicle. The focus is on the rear bench, which can be electrically reclined and features a super soft neck pillow. You also get the option of adjusting the co-driver's seat electrically from the rear bench, take charge of the panoramic sunroof and also roll up the blinds on the windows and the rear windscreen with the touch of a button.

Move to the front half of the cabin, and you'd realise that the E does a mighty good job of impersonating the big S-Class. The layout seems familiar, with a huge slab of wood running across the dash, and the horizontally aligned air-con vents. It gets two 12.3-inch screens - one for the instrument cluster, and the other for the infotainment. Speaking of which, the infotainment screen is paired to a stellar 13-speaker Burmester audio setup, and can be controlled by the touchpad on the steering wheel.

Mercedes-Benz will launch both the E200 (petrol) and E350d (diesel) variants. The E200 features a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine that's good for 184PS and 300Nm. On the other hand, the diesel gets a big 3.0-litre V6 motor that dishes out 258PS and 620Nm. Both motors are paired with Mercedes' new 9G-Tronic gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels.

The new E-Class is very hard to dislike, as we found out when we drove one in Goa earlier this month. All that's left to be seen are the prices, which should be a nudge over its rivals. Wondering how the big E fares against the opposition? Fret not, we've got you covered
