KTM Unveils Fuel-injected 2-stroke Enduro Bikes

KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI become world’s first fuel-injected 2-stroke off-road motorcycles to be manufactured for the masses

KTM, the Austrian bike manufacturer, has unveiled two bikes - the KTM 250 EXC TPI and KTM 300 EXC TPI in the European Union. The bikes are equipped with a newly-developed TPI fuel-injection system. In this system, there are two injectors squirting fuel into the transfer ports of the cylinder. This results in better engine refinement and also a drastic reduction in fuel consumption. The electronic fuel-injection system also benefits off-road riders by removing the need to pre-mix fuel. The system comes with altitude and temperature compensation as well, which eliminates the need to change the jetting for different environments. The bikes also come with a new cylinder with two lateral domes that hold the fuel injectors. To fully exploit the technology, the bikes also feature a new throttle body, air filter box, fuel tank (9.25 litres) and a new Engine Management System (EMS). The EMS houses a new ECU that gathers information from a number of sensors such as intake and ambient air pressure, throttle position, oil and water temperature which then determines the perfect ignition timing and fuel injection. The KTM 250 EXC TPI comes with a liquid-cooled, 249cc two-stroke engine while the KTM 300 EXC TPI comes with a bigger, 293.2cc engine. Both the engines feature a balancer shaft and a 6-speed transmission with Enduro-specific wide ratio specification.

The bikes use a chrome molybdenum frame which also houses the oil filler cap and the hose to the oil tank within the frame tube. The bikes also come with new graphics. KTM has equipped the bikes with top-spec parts such as a lithium-ion battery, electric starter, Brembo wave-type brakes, WP Xplor 48 inverted forks up front with a massive 300mm travel, and a rear WP monoshock. Both the bikes tip the scales with a dry weight of 103kg.

This includes the elimination of the need to pre-mix fuel or change the jetting for different environments, which is a major benefit to the rider for hassle free, 2-stroke fun,” said Joachim Sauer, product marketing offroad.

It is unlikely that KTM will bring these machines to India, but if it does, it will definitely stir up the off-road motorcycling segment.
