Jaguar is looking at introducing it's most fuel efficient engine yet in the form of an all new 2.2 litre diesel unit. The engine is touted to make its official debut by the New York Motor Show this year.

Fitted to a prototype vehicle, Jaguar's new four cylinder, 2179cc, 16 valve common rail diesel unit, is currently undergoing rigorous testing in the UK. The new powertrain is expected to make its official debut on the XF production car and we are hoping that this announcement will be made at the New York Auto Show later this year.

The engine features a water cooled turbocharger with low friction pistons, new injectors and a new crankshaft. Touted to churn out over 190 PS and about 450Nm of torque, the new engine is capable of returning 22.5 kilometres to the litre on the combined cycle according to test data.

Further to this, the engine will incorporate an intelligent stop-start system that is said to reduce the amount of time it takes to shut an engine down and start it up again. The crankshaft sensor and fuel rail pressure holding system in conjunction with the system allows the engine to restart from as low as 400 rpm if the engine goes into shut down mode. As explained by Jaguar, should a driver be approaching a roundabout and apply the brake to come to a 'halt-wait-go' situation, the engine will begin the shut down process, however if the stop is extremely short and the driver wishes to enter the round a bout, then the engine is capable of firing right back up, unlike conventional start-stop systems that have to completely shut down to restart. In terms of fuel efficiency, the stop-start system can benefit the owner by up to seven per cent, depending on how the vehicle is driven.

Along with the new engine, a new advanced 8 speed ZF automatic gearbox is also expected. The new gearbox is said to optimize the power delivery from the 2.2 litre diesel mill.
