On September 8, 2016, premium car manufacturer Jaguar took the wraps off the future of electric motorsport by revealing its Formula E team’s official name as Panasonic Jaguar Racing. From October 2016, the racing team will compete in the Formula E Championship.

Christened as the I-Type 1, it is the first all-electric Jaguar racing car. At the launch event, which took place at the Jaguar Collections Centre in Warwickshire, England, the car made a dramatic debut in the hands of the team’s reserve driver, Ho-Pin Tung.

Williams Advanced Engineering, Williams F1 team’s technology arm helped Jaguar develop the I-Type 1. The duo previously came together to make the Jaguar C-X75 hybrid supercar concept. All teams currently competing in the Formula E Championship use a common chassis and battery but are free to develop their own powertrains.

Jaguar also revealed the driver line-up for the upcoming Formula E season, with Adam Carrol and Mitch Evans confirmed to drive the I-Type 1 in the team’s inaugural championship event, with the opening race scheduled in Hong Kong on October 9, 2016.

Gerd Mäuser, chairman of Panasonic Jaguar Racing, said, “Today marks a new chapter in the history of Jaguar Racing. As the first premium car manufacturer in Formula E we are proud to be back in top-level motorsport. The future is changing and we’re part of that change.”

Nick Rogers, executive director, product engineering, Jaguar Land Rover, added, “Over the next five years we will see more changes in the automotive world than in the last three decades. The championship will enable us to engineer and test our advanced technologies under extreme performance conditions. We will apply this vital knowledge as part of our real world development.”

Driver Adam Carroll has experience in racing from the world of karting, Formula 3, Grand Prix 2, A1 Grand Prix, IndyCar and WEC (World Endurance Championship). Mitch Evans, on the other hand, won the 2012 Grand Prix 3 Championship. He has also competed in the historic 24 hours of Le Mans, finishing second in class in 2015. Earlier this year, he competed in the Grand Prix 2 Series, representing Campos Racing.

Ho-Pin Tung joins Panasonic Jaguar Racing with racing experience in F3, A1 Grand Prix, Grand Prix 2, WEC, IndyCar and F1 testing. Tung also brings real-world Formula E experience to the team, having competed in three races in the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship.
