Indian-owned British luxury car manufacturer, Jaguar land Rover (JLR), has revealed an all-new Ingenium petrol motor. The manufacturer introduced the Ingenium engine with the launch of a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder diesel motor in 2015. However, the petrol motor will only be introduced in JLR cars in 2017. The company also announced a £30 million (approximately Rs 267 crore) worth research project for the development of an advanced eight-speed transmission.
The Ingenium motors are part the company’s long-term future plan, which aims at engines which are lighter, more powerful, fuel efficient, and have lower emissions. JLR states that the Ingenium units are the most-advanced engines that it has ever produced. The motors deliver 25 per cent more power and the fuel consumption is reduced by up to 15 per cent.
The engine units are manufactured in Jaguar Land Rover’s £1 billion (around Rs 9,000 crore) worth Engine Manufacturing Centre in Wolverhampton. The engines will make use of integrated exhaust system, electro-hydraulic valvetrain, twin-scroll turbochargers with ceramic bearings to achieve the said level of performance and emissions.
The Ingenium motors use a modular engine platform with a constant 500cc capacity per cylinder, however, the cylinder capacity will be used in a variety of configurations. For instance, it is already used with a 2.0-litre diesel (2015) and a 2.0-litre petrol (unveiled now) motor. Further, it can be expanded to a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder unit or even a 1.5-litre inline three-cylinder motor.
Speaking of the advanced transmission process
, JLR aims to develop an eight-speed transmission which will employ an ultra-wide gear ratio spread (20:1). The gearbox will integrate low-range setup for a smooth off-road operation. It will be based on a standard dual-clutch transmission along with hybrid technologies.
As far as India is concerned, the Ingenium motors have not been introduced in the country, but we expect the manufacturer to launch the diesel version of the motor soon. The diesel Ingenium could make its way to the country with the launch of the Land Rover Discovery 5.
