Jaguar has inaugurated its new design studio in Gaydon, UK. Spread across 12,000sqm, the state of the art design studio will give birth to a whole new generation of Jaguar cars. The new space also features a plethora of industry-leading technology, making it one of the most advanced design studios in the world. The main studios - named Studio 3 and Studio 4 - draw inspiration from the Le Mans-winning Jaguar D-Types of 1956 and 1957. If you’re wondering where Studio 1 and Studio 2 are, they are at the carmaker’s existing Whitley studio.

Studio 3 and Studio 4 have a total of 10 claying trays, allowing 10 clay concepts to be built at a time. These plates are capable of holding up to four and a half tonnes and also feature floor integrated lifts for easier working. They are also equipped with floor-integrated machine rails that allow processing of the model on either sides. The carmaker also added that it can place both the interior and exterior clay models side by side. The studios are also fully temperature controlled as clay requires ambient temperatures to be useable.

Studio 4 faces to the north to ensure that maximum natural light flows in thanks to huge glass doors. The models can also be taken outside to be seen in natural light. And to support that, the studio comes equipped with 906sqm glass area and three full-length skylights that help flood it with natural light. Topping up the ambience of the area are the wooden beams.

Complimenting these studios is a variety of technology. One that stands out among these is Virtual Reality technology. The VR tech enables the designers to experience and test their designs and ideas in the virtual world. Designers test the early conceptual stage ideas, following which the Computer-Aided Surfacing (CAS) team converts their sketches into digital 3D models. From there, the in-house Design Visualisation and Animation (DVA) team works to render and animate the sketches into 3D models.

Topping the list is the Heart Space. It is the hub of the new design studio at Gaydon, which brings the 280-member team under one roof. The Heart Space is surrounded by different categories of working environments where the team works on interior, exterior, colour and trim materials. The design visualisation and technical disciplines team also works around the same place. The Colour and Materials team will also get to experiment more thanks to additional space and technology.
