It seems Yamaha is hard at work on developing the new YZF-R6. A few images have been leaked online, which show the Japanese bikemaker's middleweight sport bike in detail. In terms of design, it resembles its elder sibling, the YZF-R1. In these images, the most prominent feature the R6 shares with the R1 is the hidden headlight treatment given to the former. More R1 design features find their way on the R6 such as the air vents on the fuel tank and the rear-view-mirror–mounted turn indicators. Coming to the engine, the current R6 puts down 125PS of peak power from its 600cc engine.
If we recall, the focus on developing new middleweight sport bikes has reduced across bikemakers. Rumours have been rife about Honda retiring its middleweight sport bike and R6 rival, the CBR600RR. However, this might actually be the reason why Yamaha would want to develop a new R6 – the reduced competition in the segment would benefit its new offering the most at this time.
Yamaha's R6 nameplate dates back to 1998 when it was first introduced by its maker. Since then, the motorcycle has been through various facelifts and upgrades, 2010 being the last time it got either (there were some powertrain fixes in 2010 for the R6). It got its last visual overhaul back in 2008. We will get to know in time if Yamaha is indeed working on a new R6. Stay tuned to ZigWheels for all developments on the new R6.
