Nissan Kicks, the Japanese manufacturer’s newest compact SUV, has now entered production in Mexico. The car was showcased a number of times before and even at the recently concluded Rio Olympics in Brazil. It will be produced at the company’s Aguascalientes manufacturing facility in Mexico -- making it the first plant to manufacture this SUV in the world.
The Kicks is a global vehicle and the Japanese manufacturer plans to launch it in 80 different countries. It is quite possible that Nissan might want to introduce the SUV in India as well as the company has a production unit in our country along with the fact that the car is based on the Micra and the Sunny’s ‘V’ platform, which too are manufactured in India. The Micra is one of the top-most exported cars from India and is manufactured at Renault-Nissan’s plant in Oragadam, Chennai.
Dimensionally, the Kicks is 4,295mm long, 1,760mm wide, 1,590mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,610mm. We can clearly see from the dimensions that the car, if launched in India, will go up against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, the Renault Duster, etc -- which fall in the same category. Moreover, the Indian-spec version could draw its power from the same set of engines that are available in the Nissan Terrano (or Renault Duster) - the 1.5-litre dCi diesel and the 1.6-litre petrol.
According to the company, the Aguascalientes plant will also assist Nissan’s other manufacturing facilities throughout the world to produce the Kicks. Nissan India hasn’t confirmed if the Kicks would be launched in the country any time soon. However, if we had to make a wild guess, we would say it could arrive on our shores in late 2017 or even early 2018.
