If your dad is a business magnate and insists he wants you to drive around in an S-Class, we’d heavily recommend this one

It was only a matter of time before Mercedes-Benz India let the cuckoo cousin of the sombre S-Class loose in India. The Mercedes-AMG S 63 will be launched in a little over a week from today, on June 18. The S 63 will be made available in the “I’m the son of the CEO” spec coupe, and not the “I’m CEO” spec sedan. Phew!

Let’s kick things off with the business end of things. Powering the S 63 is a 4.0-litre, twin-turbo V8 (M177) that’s an older iteration of the engine powering the AMG GT (M178). It’s good for 612PS of power and 900Nm (yes, you read that right) of torque. That’s 27PS and 200Nm more than Mercedes-AMG’s flagship GT R. You don’t really care about the engine being a bit old now, do you?

Of course, 900Nm of torque and rear-wheel drive would’ve been borderline suicidal. So, Mercedes-AMG, being the good blokes they are, have equipped the S 63 with their 4Matic+ all-wheel drive tech. All that power is sent to the wheels via the slick 9-speed G-Tronic gearbox. Number geeks - mug this up. 0-100kmph takes 3.5 seconds, and the Coupe will top out at 250kmph. As always, if you ask Mercedes-AMG nicely (read pay for the AMG Driver’s package) that limit can be raised to 300kmph.

But, the whole point of an S-Class is opulence. Even the mad hatters at AMG won’t compromise on that. So, you get all you’d expect from it. The sleek all-LED lighting, Nappa leather upholstery, a three-spoke flat-bottom steering wheel and even an analogue clock are all present. It’s loaded with tech too, including a 12.3-inch TFT driver display that replaces the dials. And because this is an AMG, you’d get the choicest of information on it including lateral and longitudinal acceleration, engine output and torque, boost pressure, tyre temperatures and pressures.

The S 63 Coupe will lock its very expensive horns with the Porsche Panamera Turbo. We’re expecting it to be priced around the Rs 2 crore mark. Lest we forget, there’s no bonkers S 65 just as yet. But, we won’t be surprised if Mercedes-AMG decides to unleash that as well.
