Hyundai Elite i20 To Get 6 Airbags; Automatic Specs Confirmed

Here's a scoop for Hyundai aficionados. The top-spec variant of the Elite i20 is all set to get safer. Sources tell us that the Asta (O) variant will get 6 airbags. The manufacturer is expected to make an official announcement regarding the same very soon.

The only other hatchback in this price range to feature 6 airbags is the Ford Figo. Most of the Elite i20's rivals get a set of dual airbags only. Notably, the first generation of the i20 featured side and curtain airbags, along with all-wheel disc brakes. We did scorn about the missing safety tech in the Elite, and we are glad that Hyundai is making amends on this front. 

Along with the announcement of the added safety tech, Hyundai will also take the wraps off the Elite i20 Automatic. Like we previously reported, the automatic will be available in the Magna variant only. The automatic variant will be powered by the Euro-spec 1.4-litre petrol engine that develops 100PS of power and 132Nm of torque. Notably, the previous generation of the i20 had a similar power output. Gearbox duties will be taken care off by the 4-speed torque converter unit that does duty in the Grand i10 as well. 

A missing automatic variant was amongst the few chinks in the Elite i20's armour, which has been plugged. The downside, of course, is that it will only be available in the not-so-well-specced Magna variant which will cause it to lose some niceties such as the projector headlamps and the touchscreen AVN. That said, we would love to see Hyundai surprise us by offering the automatic in the top-spec variant.
