Hyundai shelves MPV plans; impetus on compact SUV

Hyundai first showcased its sub-4 metre SUV for India, the Carlino, at the 2016 Auto Expo. Then in the very early stages of design, the news of the SUV went under the carpet. Until now. Y.K. Koo, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India, has now confirmed to ZigWheels that the Carlino SUV will be launched in the country in April 2019. This would mean that Hyundai would be the last major manufacturer to enter this space -- after three SUVs from Mahindra, one from Maruti and another from Ford.

But, like the Creta, Hyundai’s understanding of the market means that the Carlino too is poised to be a hit amongst the masses. Hyundai has confirmed that it will introduce the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine packing 120PS and 171Nm. The diesel will be most likely the same 1.4-litre diesel with a retune for the SUV. Both these engines will most likely get 6-speed manual transmissions for better efficiency.

Hyundai Carlino Spied

Last week, the SUV was even spotted testing in the US with heavy camouflage. What gives it away is the size and the front face, which is similar to the one we saw on the Carlino concept. The big grille, sleek headlamps, alloy wheels and the boxy shape all resemble the Carlino and are what will make the SUV look appealing to the masses. Inside, expect all the tech available in the Elite i20 and a few bits borrowed from the Verna as well. Hyundai, can you also include the ventilated seats, please?
