There are very few functional flying motorcycles in the world, and all of them are made by startups. Now in a first, a big mainstream brand like Honda has applied for a patent for its flying bike. The bike comes with four sets of rotors at the front and rear, and each rotor is powered by an electric motor. These motors draw power from a battery mounted inside the chassis below the rider’s seat.
The patent image don’t exactly give us a fair idea about how the bike can change directions. We believe the rotors have an adjustable pitch which would allow the bike to make turns, go forward or backwards. Another possibility would be that the whole front rotor set is capable of changing its angle depending on the direction the rider needs to fly. Since every rotor comes with its own motor, the chances of a crash are minimised in case one of the motors fails.

Since the motors are battery-powered, the battery would need to be really powerful and we hope Honda has figured out a way to make the unit light enough for sustained flight. That being said, it is unlikely that the bike could achieve high altitude as it comes with its own set of safety risks. The flight controls are on two stalks flanking the seat and there’s a windshield to protect the pilot.
Since this is still in patent stage, we believe Honda would improve upon the design considerably. Expect Honda to showcase a concept, perhaps at next year’s EICMA or Tokyo Motor Show. We all know the future is electric, and it might get even more exciting if Honda’s project, erm, takes off!
