Honda, General Motors To Jointly Develop Two New EVs

• The two carmakers already have a partnership to work on fuel cells and the Cruise Origin EV.
• Honda will design the exteriors and interiors, whereas General Motors will provide the powertrains.
• The two EVs will be manufactured at General Motors’ plants in North America.
• Honda expects the two EVs to be launched by 2024.

The trend of two major manufacturers entering into a partnership for shared platforms and future vehicles isn’t particularly new, with the Toyota-Suzuki alliance being the most recent one. And now, Honda and General Motors have entered into a partnership to co-develop two new electric vehicles for Honda, based on General Motors’ EV platform.

 

General Motors and Honda already have an ongoing partnership, under which they work on fuel cells and the Cruise Origin -- an electric self-driving and shared vehicle -- revealed in San Francisco earlier this year. Honda has also been contributing to General Motors’ battery module development efforts since 2018.

Under this partnership, Honda will design the exteriors and interiors of the new EVs, whereas the electric powertrain will be powered by General Motors’ Ultium batteries. Besides, Honda will equip the two EVs with GM’s OnStar Safety and Security Plan, hands-free advanced driver-assist technology, as well as HondaLink.

While we do not know the category of either of the two EVs, Honda has revealed that production will commence at General Motors’ plants in North America. The carmaker has also said that the two EVs are likely to launch around 2024. So, we could expect them to debut around 2023.
