In rural areas, the two-wheeler market is mostly focussed on spartan, fuel-efficient products, and the TVS XL100 has sort of become the household name when it comes to carrying stuff hassle-freely. Over time, the market has evolved but has had little to cater to the needs of rural customers. Engine:

The Honda Cliq is based on the Honda Activa 4G and uses a 109.19cc fan-cooled 4-stroke engine which produces 8PS of power at 7000rpm and 8.94Nm of torque at 5500rpm. The engine is mated to a variomatic transmission which results in a claimed top-speed of 83kmph. The TVS XL100, on the other hand, uses a smaller 99.7cc 4-stroke engine which makes about 4.3PS of power at 6000rpm and 6.5Nm of 3500rpm. Just like the Cliq, the XL is also gearless. Both the two-wheelers come with a kick-starter which reduces the load on the battery. However, the TVS XL100 misses out on an electric starter button to keep the costs down.

The Honda Cliq comes with a spring-loaded hydraulic type suspension at the front and a single shock absorber at the rear. The braking duties are taken care of by 130mm drums on both ends. The 10-inch steel rims are wrapped with block-pattern tubeless tyres which ensure good grip on broken roads.

The TVS XL100 uses telescopic forks at the front and heavy-duty twin hydraulic shocks at the rear. The XL’s braking system uses 80mm drum at the front and 110mm drum at the rear, with stainless steel cables for reliability. The XL comes with much larger 16inch spoked rims, which should tackle bad roads effectively and aid in stability as well.

Features:

Cliq features

The Honda Cliq comes with an under-seat USB port to charge your electronic devices. Apart from that, the scooter also comes with a fuel gauge to keep track of petrol usage from the 3.5litre fuel tank. Honda claims a fuel-efficiencyfigure of 60mpl and that translates into a range of around 200km per tank full. However, expect lesser range in real-world conditions. The plastic body panels may not be able to take a beating when it comes to utilitarian purposes. On the bright side, the Cliq comes with Combined Braking System (CBS), which distributes the braking force to the front wheel as well, even if only the rear brake is applied. This feature improves the braking characteristics considerably.

The Cliq also comes with a small rear load carrier with provisions to tie up cargo. The scooter uses a viscous air filter which the brand claims would last for 16,000km. With a kerb weight of 102kg and a seat height of 743mm, the Cliq is accessible for shorter riders as well. When it comes to accessories, parts such as the front screen, floor cover, center box, cap cover and rear grip can be availed at an extra cost.

TVS XL100 features

The TVS XL100 comes with a sturdy metal body and a removable pillion seat to carry extra load. The metal platform under the pillion seat allows it can take up loads without damaging the bike. For added convenience, the XL also comes with a lockable external fuel tank which can hold 4litres of fuel. TVS claims the XL will return 67kmpl. This means, technically the XL is capable of covering around 260km on a tankful. Expect a real-world range of at least 200km per full tank. The kerb weight stands at 80kg while the payload is at 130kg- this makes the XL a proper workhorse.

Conclusion:

The Honda Cliq retails at Rs 42,499, ex-showroom Delhi, while the TVS XL100 is over 10,000 rupees lower, at Rs 32,174, ex-showroom Delhi. The TVS XL100 is purpose-built and will serve without complaints for rural customers. The Honda Cliq, on the other hand, will appeal to a relatively younger audience, notwithstanding the brand’s intended positioning of the scooter. It is more powerful than the XL and is essentially the scooter version of the Navi.
