Honda’s quarter-litre track tamer is set to get a host of updates to take on the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-25R. Here’s what we could expect

The Japanese have created some wild machines over the years, but none have been wilder than its inline-four quarter-litre sportbikes from the naughties that had alarmingly high redlines. The bikes have been tamed over time, making way for simpler single-cylinders or parallel twins. Until now, the Honda CBR250RR has been the most powerful 250cc sold globally. However, it will soon lose this title to the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-25R. That said, Honda is all set to bring out a more powerful and feature-loaded version of the CBR250RR. Here’s what’s new on the bike:

MORE POWER!
The 2020 CBR250RR is likely to utilise the same 249.7cc parallel-twin motor as before. The engine internals could be updated with lighter pistons, which could result in a bump in power. We expect it to produce somewhere around 42PS compared to the older bike’s 39PS. That is as much as the KTM RC 390 BS6 and significantly higher than the TVS Apache RR 310 BS6.

New features
The baby Ceeber was already one of the most tech-savvy motorcycles in its segment. It has ride-by-wire and three riding modes. For 2020, Honda will offer a slipper clutch with the 6-speed transmission as well as an optional bi-directional quickshifter. Dual-channel ABS will remain standard but it is unlikely that the bike will get switchable ABS.

Delectable colours
Honda is likely to make little to no changes to the styling of the CBR250RR, which is a great thing as the current bike’s razor-sharp looks are awesome. To complement these looks, Honda seems to have introduced new liveries lifted off the company’s litre-class motorcycle -- the CBR1000RR-R (are we missing any Rs here?). The white one with the red frame, in particular, looks quite sinister. Honda could also add a bit of bling in the form of a gold cased USD fork and golden rims.
