Geneva 2016: India bound Audi Q2 revealed

After a teaser campaign that lasted for a few weeks leading up to the Geneva Motor Show, Audi has finally revealed the new Q2 crossover compact SUV to the public. The new Q2 will most certainly be making it to India sometime early next year and will be priced lower than the Audi Q3 making it one of the most affordable luxury cars in the country.

For starters, we love the way the Q2 looks with its Audi-esque but evolved design that makes it look much sportier than almost everything else that Audi’s Q division makes. The sporty bumper with silver accent pieces and the smaller but sharper LED headlamps make the front look aggressive while the B and C pillars painted in a shade of gloss black give the floating roof effect. At the rear, the Q2 gets even more distinct styling and the a prominent roof mounted spoiler.

Interiors

According to official Audi figures, the Audi Q2 will be 4190mm long, 1790mm wide and 1510mm tall with a wheelbase of 2600mm which will make it relatively spacious on the inside for such a small car. The Q2 will only b available with a 5-door and 5-seater layout with a 405-litre boot space with the seats up. On the inside, the Q2 will get a design similar to its larger cousins with the MMI interface and the large screen mounted in the centre console. The Q2 will also come with an optional heads up display although that is unlikely to make it to India.

In terms of engines, the Q2 will come with both a petrol and diesel engine options. Internationally, the Q2 will come with a 1.0-litre TFSI, 1.4-litre TFSI and 2.0-litre TFSI petrol engines making power figures from 116PS to 190PS. On the diesel front, the Q2 will get a 1.6-litre or a 2.0-litre TDI engine. All Audi Q2s will come with a front wheel drive layout with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed automatic gearbox with the option of a Quattro all-wheel-drive layout on the top of the line versions sometime in the future.

In Europe, the Q2 will be launched sometime mid 2016 with deliveries starting soon after. Expect the India launch to be sometime early next year with prices ranging from Rs 18-25 lakh. It will be interesting to see if Audi will consider making a slightly shorter sub 4-meter version of the Q2 for India with restyled bumpers and offer it with the 1.0-litre petrol engine to avail of the excise benefits. The only realistic competitor to the Audi Q2 currently is the Mini Cooper Countryman which is also available in India.
