Bentley has announced the latest addition to its Flying Spur range, the V8 S, ahead of its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The V8 S is the mid variant in the Flying Spur range, slotting in between the V8 and the flagship W12, but will reportedly be the sportiest of the three.
Compared to the 507 PS of the V8 the V8 S will pump out 528 PS, while peak torque has now increased to 680 Nm from 1,700 rpm. This means that the V8 S now accelerates from to 0-100 kmph in 4.9 seconds and tops out at 306 kmph. Despite this, it has a range of 837 km as well as a reasonable (for a car that weighs 2,475 kg) fuel economy of 10.9 l/100 km.
But it is not just about straight line speed with the Flying Spur V8 S; Bentley has engineered it to be an engaging drive as well. It's reportedly sharper in the corners thanks to a reworked suspension set up that stops body roll. When put into sport mode, the car automatically makes fifth gear, the most boring in the box, out of bounds and gives the driver more space to push things or potentially make an error before electronic stability controls kick in and save the day. Then there's the four-wheel drive system. Although permanent, power is concentrated 60:40 at the rear.
To distinguish it from its more plebeian sibling, the V8 S will also feature a number of sporting styling cues which hint at its new and improved sporting capabilities. The list includes a black radiator grille and rear diffuser along with a unique grille insert, and 20-inch open-spoke painted wheels. Inside the cabin, you’ll find piano-black wood veneers, a three-spoke sports steering wheel, a knurled gear lever with matching knurled shift paddles, and multiple “V8 S” logos including on the headrests.
The Bentley Flying Spur V8 S makes its official debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month. Bentley expects to deliver the first cars this summer. Pricing will be somewhere between the V8 and W12 models.
