Ford didn’t witness the best of starts for its operations in India when it tried to lure customers with the Ford Escort during the mid '90s. While the car was a monumental failure here, it did sell in good numbers across the globe. Ford then adopted the 'tailor-made cars for India' formula and, since then, has gained a decent market presence in the country with offerings such as the first-gen Figo and the EcoSport.

On September 15, 2016, the American automaker announced that its Sanand manufacturing plant near Ahmedabad, Gujarat, had just seen its 1,00,000th vehicle roll out of its premises, and that it was the company’s cheapest offering in India - the hatchback Figo.

The plant was opened in the second quarter of 2015 and Ford claims that it has achieved this feat in less than 15 months of operations. At the plant, the Michigan-based company manufactures the Figo hatchback and the Figo Aspire sub-4 metre sedan for India. Apart from these products, the plant produces vehicles for 25 markets across the globe, including parts of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

In August 2016, the Indian arm of the American car firm emerged as the largest car exporter at 17,860 units, pushing its counterpart from South Korea, Hyundai, to the second place with 16,506 units. During the same month, Ford India’s sales grew by 12.5 per cent, with 8,548 units sold.
