Airbags were missing in both the petrol and diesel Ambient variants

Ford has a habit of doing things silently. Earlier this year, it slashed prices of the roomiest car on offer in India by up to Rs 2.82 lakh. Although this was a masterstroke to lure in more customers, the American car firm didn’t really bother publishing it anywhere. This time around, Ford has quietly equipped the base variants (Ambient) of its compact SUV, the EcoSport, with dual airbags to make it more appealing for customers who keep safety as a top priority. This simply means that now all the EcoSport variants come with dual airbags as standard.

With this added feature, the base-spec EcoSport now becomes a more attractive option as compared to its main competitor, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, which features only the driver airbag in the base-spec LDi variant. Unlike the EcoSport, the Vitara Brezza is currently available only with a diesel engine under the hood. Where the EcoSport Ambient variant with the 1.5-litre diesel engine is priced at Rs 7.6 lakh, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza LDi with a 1.3-litre diesel mill has a list price of Rs 7.19 lakh. On the other hand, the EcoSport Ambient trim with the 1.5-litre petrol engine is priced at Rs 6.93 lakh (all prices ex-showroom Delhi). While the petrol-powered EcoSport doesn’t have a direct rival in its category, we expect Maruti Suzuki to launch the Vitara Brezza with a petrol engine by the end of the first quarter in 2017.

The 1.5-litre diesel mill that powers the Ford EcoSport is tuned to pump out 100PS of power and 205Nm of torque, which is more than the 1.3-litre diesel motor that features in the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, churning out 89PS of power and 200Nm of torque. Other competitors in the sub-4 metre compact-SUV segment include three products from Mahindra - TUV300, NuvoSport and Bolero Power+.
