With efficiency being one of the most important factors to consider before buying a car, manufacturers are getting creative in building their cars and ensuring they return great efficiency figures. We list the top 5 most efficient cars launched in 2015

Maruti Suzuki Celerio

1.)    Maruti Suzuki Celerio Diesel – Maruti Suzuki brought in the Celerio last year but just in petrol form. Although they took a bit longer to bring in a diesel variant, they ensured that it was the most efficient car in the country. The Celerio diesel sports an all-new engine that has been specially developed for the Indian market. The two-pot 793cc motor makes 47.6PS and 125Nm. The beauty of this car though is in the way Maruti Suzuki has kept its weight in check. By reducing a cylinder and making use of an all aluminium block, the Manesar based car maker has kept the weight restricted to 830kg. To put things in perspective, its immediate competition, the Beat Diesel, weighs 1,027kg. With a claimed efficiency of 27.62kmpl, the Celerio diesel leads the chart of the most efficient cars of 2015.

2015 Honda Jazz

2.)    Honda Jazz and Maruti Suzuki Baleno – The second spot on the most efficient cars of 2015 is shared by the Honda Jazz and the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. Just like the Celerio diesel, Maruti Suzuki has employed a similar philosophy with the Baleno. Despite being a premium hatch the car weighs under a ton. The Baleno returns an efficiency of 27.3kmpl from the trusted 1.3-litre DDiS unit. Honda on the other hand has taken a different approach to ensure they rank right up there in terms of efficiency. In the Jazz, Honda has fitted a 6-speed gearbox with nicely spaced out ratios thereby resulting in great efficiency.

2015 Ford Figo hatchback

3.)    Ford Figo – While Maruti Suzuki and the Honda have been fighting amongst themselves to bring extremely fuel efficient cars, Ford too managed to spring in a surprise with the Figo hatchback. The Ford Figo diesel has been installed with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder mill. This unit makes 100PS/215Nm and comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Despite being amongst the most powerful diesel hatchbacks in the country, the Figo still manages to claim an ARAI rated 25.83kmpl which in itself is a phenomenal feat.

4.)    Renault Kwid: If you leave the figures aside, the Renault Kwid should stand right at the top alongside the Celerio diesel. Reason? It comes only in petrol form and despite that it claims 25.17kmpl. Now that’s something right? Aside from using an all-aluminium engine, Renault has been extremely smart in ensuring that Kwid is as light as can be. Using three lug nuts instead of four and one wiper blade up front are just some of the many ways Renault has managed to keep the weight restricted to just 660kg.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga SHVS

5.)    Maruti Suzuki Ertiga SHVS: Maruti Suzuki is known for producing extremely efficient cars. The fact that the Ertiga SHVS is the third car to feature in this list is testimony of the same. For the Ertiga though they have taken a different approach. The 1.3-litre diesel Ertiga is now SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) just like the Ciaz. It is the most affordable car to feature start/stop technology. Thanks to this feature, the Ertiga now claims an efficiency of 24.52kmpl as opposed to the 20.77 from the non-SHVS model.
