Last year, Hero Cycles signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Yamaha and Mitsui to co-develop and manufacture electrically assisted bicycles for India. The duo will officially announce its partnership tomorrow (September 17) while launching its very first electric bike for India - the Lectro EHX20.

Though the bicycle itself will be designed and manufactured by Hero, it’s electric drivetrain and battery will be provided by Yamaha. On the other hand, Mitsui, the third partner and one of the largest trading and investment companies in Japan, will look into the project's feasibility.

While the company hasn’t revealed any details about the e-bike, the initial idea was to develop an electrically-assisted mountain bike. Hero already sells hybrid electric cycles in India under the Lectro brand name. So a viable option would be to introduce an electric mountain bike co-developed with Yamaha to strengthen the brand's position in the market.
