With all the recce work done, FireStorm, a one of its kind, mountain bike race is set to flag off on the 26th of March 2011. Organized by Firefox Bicycles, the event will be conducted on a predetermined 35 kilometer track in the Aravalli Hills near the forest area of Surajkund in the Delhi-NCR region. The company is expecting over 120 participants to take part in this adventure bike race. The race is touted to be a test on endurance, cycling skills as well as strength for there are a number of surprises that have been incorporated as part of the route. The winner of the event stands to win a gift hamper that is worth around Rs. 4 Lakhs!
Incidentally, a pre event 6.5 kilometer run was organized on the 16th of March for the media to understand the nature of the event as well as witness the entire route first hand on a bicycle. The route is rather scenic and involves traversing over some rather rocky terrain. There are a number of climbs and steep downhill runs thrown in for good measure and should pose as a good challenge to the riders.
Mountain biking as such is a nascent sport in India and it is definitely a step in the right direction by Firefox Bicycles to give this sport such impetus and get people involved at a competition level. With the first event already listed as a success, we surely hope that future mountain bike challenges such as FireStorm become an annual feature.
