Organizes a unique learning workshop for design professionals and students from April 25th to April 29th 2011

While the education scenario in India has seen noticeable growth, especially in the Management, Information Technology (IT) and Finance sectors, there remains a strong need for highly developed professionals in other promising fields like Industrial, Entertainment and Transportational design etc.

On Friday, ZigWheels paid a visit to a recently established Educational Campus in the city of Pune at Fursungi that appears to have laid the foundation for overcoming the country’s limited infrastructure in imparting quality education in the field of Design and Production Management. Going with the name DSK Supinfocom International Campus, this Institute came into being through a joint venture between Real Estate firm DSK Group and recognized French Institute – Chamber of Commerce and Industry of North De France (CCINDF).

The DSK International School of Design (ISD) for Industrial Design, which caters to the educational and vocational training requirements of its design students recently organized a unique design workshop titled ‘Masterclass’ that provided participants a unique learning experience through 5 intensive days of training and guidance from working professionals and experts from the design industry.

ZigWheels was invited for a one on one interaction with the faculty working with the students at Institute as a part of this workshop dedicated to Global Transportation Design. Amongst those present for the interaction were Ajay Jain, Senior Designer, Renault design, France; Olivier Molody, Senior Designer, BMW designworks, Germany and Gary Sanchez, Designer/ concept artist, Freelancer, France.

The aim of the workshop was simple to understand, but surprisingly limitless in its parameters and likewise its expectations from the students taking part. The students were asked by the faculty to conceptualize any transportation vehicle (not just a four wheeled passenger car) that would serve as a representation of a real world utilitarian vehicle in the real world. The proposed vehicle could harness land, aerial or marine capabilities (or in some cases a combination of the thee), but incorporate the space and seating conducive for 8-12 passengers.

Sitting amongst such an eclectic mix of creative minds, we discussed the purpose and ultimate aim of this unique design program among other things that would eventually decide the winner and more importantly serve as a platform for the future aspirants of automotive and transportation design. Exchanging our views on the processes and methodologies used in modern day transportation design, we came to realize that starting from the first sketch of a concept car/automobile to its final stage of production was a long and complicated process that was influenced and assimilated by a number of factors primarily including the need of the currently prevailing market conditions.

Speaking to the some of the professional designers from reputed automotive firms like BMW and Renaults we were informed that many of the student’s design and concepts were inspired by various external influences, like Nature, their personal experiences and existing models as you can see in some of the sample sketches provided to us by the Institute.

The faculty at DSK International School of Design (ISD) Industrial Design has high hopes from the students who have shown a lot of potential in this short but intensive automotive design program. The faculty have further evinced interest in recruiting talented youngsters, who display a high level of skill and long term potential into their respective organizations.

Workshops like these, while at a primitive stage in the country will go a long way in shaping the future aspirations of the country’s creative talent in their pursuit of achieving their global ambitions in the field of automotive design and transportation.
