Nine months back VW announced that the recall campaign will soon begin in India

Skoda Superb

While Volkswagen makes many mainstream cars under its own brand name, it has subsidiaries like Audi and Skoda who carry the parent company’s tech into their offerings around the world, chief among which is the TDI diesel engine technology. Since VW owed up to the diesel scam, which was unearthed more than a year ago, it has been signing settlement agreements with the regulatory authorities or offering fix for the affected range of cars. VW is now ready to start recalls in India with the last-gen Skoda Superb.

The VW-developed 2.0-litre EA 189 diesel mill that powered the previous-gen Superb was fitted with a cheat device that forged the emission level readings. These false readings helped the German carmaker enter the American and European markets and the same engine was bolted to the Audi, Skoda and VW offerings.

In US and Europe, real-time on-road emission tests are part of the COP (conformity of production) guidelines and bases that the regulatory bodies could prosecute the German brand. Since, India doesn’t have real-time tests defined in the COP guidelines, the government could not sue VW.

According to a reliable source, who prefers to stay anonymous, once the Skoda recall is completed, VW will recall other models carrying the same engine. During the fix, a software upgrade will be carried out which will help bring the real emission readings from the engine. Once the car owners fills the required details mentioned on Skoda India’s website, they will get a pop-up informing whether their car is affected.

Skoda recently launched the new-gen Superb with an updated diesel engine family which doesn’t have the same emissions issue. Deliveries of the new Superb is expected to commence soon.
