The impact of demonetisation caused a drop in overall sales figures in the two-wheeler market, however, few manufacturers did manage to show good growth in the month of November

The implementation of demonetisation has impacted the economy of the country which can be observed affecting buyers and consumers at all business levels. The growing two-wheeler market in India has also been affected by the same and has resulted in an overall drop of five per cent in sales. However, the sudden drop in sales figures has begun to return back to normality which has been reported by few manufacturers. The implementation of different cashless transaction methods has been one of the most vital reasons for the gradual regain of vehicle sales. Here is a brand-wise report on the numbers churned out by major domestic two-wheeler manufacturers for the month of November 2016.

Hero MotoCorp Achiever 150

Hero MotoCorp Limited:

Beginning with the market leader, Hero MotoCorp suffered a sharp drop of 12.9 per cent in November. The manufacturer managed to sell 4,79,856 units as compared to 5,50,731 units in the corresponding month last year. On comparing the figures between months of the same year, the company witnessed a dearth of 70,875 units. For the year of 2016, Hero had managed to register impressive 6 lakhs plus figures for the month of August (616,424), September (674,961) and October (6,63,153), benefiting from the festive season. In January, the company had recorded low sales figures of just under five lakh which has now been surpassed by the November figures, marking the lowest drop for the year 2016.

Bajaj

Bajaj Auto Limited:

The two-wheeler section of Bajaj Auto experienced a drop of 12 per cent and was able to register sales of 2,37,757 units last month. The company had managed to sell 2,70,886 units for the corresponding month last year. The overall domestic and export sales graph was consistent for Bajaj for the year 2016 till it took a downfall in November 2016.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India:

It was the other way round for Honda as in spite of the demonetization the company registered a growth of one per cent in November 2016. The company did experience is a sudden drop in sales during the first week but quickly regained momentum and registered an overall sale of 3,25,448 units. In terms of sales figures last month, Honda had managed to sell 3,26,466 units in November 2015. Honda increased its market share to 23 per cent amongst other two-wheeler manufacturers in the market.

TVS Victor

TVS Motor Company:

The company registered an overall sale of 2,19,088 units in November 2016 as compared to 2,17,706 units in the corresponding month last year. A minor growth rate of 0.6 per cent was established. Notably, the sales of mopeds were significantly higher as compared to scooters and motorcycles in this month.

Royal Enfield Himalayan

Royal Enfield: 

The month of November 2016 turned out to be very good for RE in both domestic and export segment. The bike maker registered an astounding growth of 41 percent as it sold 57,313 units as compared to 40,769 units in the corresponding month last year. If this wasn’t enough, the manufacturer has also moved up in overall ranking in the domestic market, surpassing TVS and clinching the title of the fifth largest two-wheeler manufacturer for this month. While other manufacturers experienced a drop or sustained sales in November 2016, RE despite being a premium motorcycle manufacturer clocked commendable growth. 

Yamaha FZ-16

India Yamaha Motor:

The Indian arm of Yamaha Motor Company registered a good growth of 20 per cent in November 2016. The company managed to sell 51,106 units as compared to 42,719 units in the corresponding month last year. The company’s current interest is in tier-II and tier-III cities and even though the market has suffered a drop in sales due to the demonisation, the company has shown very good growth. As per the Yamaha officials, the positive success of the company has been credited to the brand’s ongoing customer-centric activities and strong product portfolio.
