The petrol variant will come with the new 2.0-litre petrol engine from the Elantra; a bigger diesel engine is expected as well.

Hyundai is steadily making its way towards the premium segment, bolstered by the success of the popular Creta that retails with a Rs 10 lakh+ price tag. With the new Elantra launched just a week ago, Hyundai is aiming at the D-segment with its aggressive sticker price. While the Elantra competes against the likes of the Toyota Corolla Altis and the Skoda Octavia, the Korean manufacturer seems to have its next target set on the Mahindra XUV5OO.

Now, sources close to the manufacturer have confirmed that the next offering to be launched in October is the Tucson. Hyundai had showcased the third generation Tucson at the Auto Expo in Delhi, which back then was confirmed to be the second offering for this year. The Tucson is likely to be priced around the Rs 15 lakh mark and will position itself between the Creta and the Santa Fe.

Unlike the previous generation Tucson, which was sold in India only with a diesel engine option, the upcoming new model will also feature a petrol variant. And the engine to power the Tucson will be the recently debuted 2.0-litre petrol motor that does duty in the new Elantra. In the sedan, the engine produces 152PS of power and 192Nm of peak torque. Transmission duties are handled by a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The Tucson will feature the same configuration with the possibility of slightly tweaked mapping with revised gear ratios to suit the characteristics of the SUV.

As far as the diesel variant is concerned, the SUV is likely to receive a more powerful 2.0-litre motor instead of the 1.6-litre mill used in the Creta. The 2.0-litre mill that Hyundai offers in the international market is capable of churning out 185PS of power and an impressive 400Nm of torque, making it a desirable SUV. The diesel variant will likely be introduced with an option of an automatic transmission.

Considering the trend of buyers switching back to petrol vehicles due to the shrinking gap between the fuel prices, Hyundai seems to be bringing the new Tuscon to India at the right time. Watch this space for more information on the transforming SUV market in India.
