MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi has injured himself severely while training at his ranch in Italy for next week’s 2017 San Marino Grand Prix

Valentino Rossi

Valentino Rossi is a name that is synonymous with MotoGP. The Italian legend has been racing in the premiere class since 2000 and is the only rider to compete in 300 Grand Prix races, a feat he achieved at last week’s British Grand Prix. Throughout the current season, Rossi has been riding hard and fast this season against riders half his age. While ardent fans of the 38-year-old legend think he can win a 10th championship title, it seems unlikely in 2017 as the Yamaha rider injured himself while training at his ranch in Tavullia, Italy. The Doctor, as he is popularly known, sustained fractures of the tibia and fibula of his right leg after crashing during an enduro training session with the VR46 Academy riders.

Rossi was rushed to the ‘Ospedale Civile di Urbino' hospital for a check-up from where he was transferred to the 'Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Ospedali Riuniti' in Ancona. Upon arrival, Valentino Rossi underwent a surgery which was performed by Dr Raffaele Pascarella, director of the Orthopedics and Traumatology Division. During the surgery, the fractures were fixated using a metal pin - a locked intramedullary nail - without any complications. Yamaha has said that it will release further updates in due course of time.

About his injury and surgery, Valentino Rossi said, "The surgery went well. This morning, when I woke up, I felt already good. I would like to thank the staff of the Ospedali Riuniti in Ancona, and in particular Doctor Pascarella who operated on me. I'm very sorry for the incident. Now I want to be back on my bike as soon as possible. I will do my best to make it happen!"

Although Rossi is no stranger to crashing and then getting back on his bike this year, it looks highly unlikely that the Italian will participate at next week’s San Marino GP in Misano. Earlier this year, Rossi had injured himself during a motocross training just before the Italian GP. But the crash didn’t stop him for competing and went on to finish fourth in the race. This time, however, the injury seems to be far worse and his prospects for the 2017 season seems all but over. We wish the MotoGP legend a speedy recovery and look forward to see him get back on the Yamaha M1 soon to enthral us motorcycle and MotoGP enthusiasts.
