Chevrolet Essentia Compact Sedan: Top 5 facts

The Chevrolet Essentia is a new compact sedan concept from General Motors. That said, the car we see here will actually make it to production in almost the same design and interior that we see bar a few changes.

Exterior Design:

The Chevrolet Essentia will of course be a sub 4-meter car but since it is based on the Beat which in turn is much smaller hatchback than the likes of the Swift (on which the Dzire is based), the designers at GM had a lot more space to play around with. So on the whole, the Essentia does look a lot better than some of its other playmates but as a package, there still seems to be something missing. The front is too highly raked and angled and the rear, although well styled, could have certainly looked a lot better. We will also probably not get these large wheels that the concept gets although we do hope that Chevy does not stick the consumers with a set of conservative boring wheels that we have seen on some of their other cars in the past.

Interior Design:

The Chevrolet Essentia continues to get many hints of design from the Beat on the insides too. The dashboard is well contoured and comes with a prominent centre console. That said, the Essentia in production form will not come with the same coffee colored interior that you see here. What we will probably see is a more acceptable beige colored interior with a black bottom and a fabric seats with a leather option. The new Essentia also gets a separate speedometer console just like the one on the Beat. The one here though is much larger and much more detailed than on the hatchback.

Engines:

Considering the fact that the Essentia is a sub 4-meter sedan, General Motors will equip the car with engines that are in the excise benefit category. This means that the petrol will be a 1.2-litre motor whereas the diesel engine will be a 1.3-litre engine which will make around 90PS of peak power and 200Nm of torque. The Essentia will be a front wheel drive car with a 5-speed manual gearbox and an optional automatic gearbox that could be an AMT unit.

Space:

The Essentia, like most sub 4-meter sedans is a little short on space as compared to a full size sedan. That said, the car has been carefully designed with scooped out front seats that give as much space as possible. There is enough shoulder space in rear though for three passengers and enough headroom too. The boot is well sized but the loading lip is a tad bit high which could make loading large objects difficult.

Prices and competition:

The Chevrolet Essentia will be priced between Rs 5-8 lakhs. The new compact Sedan will go up against the likes of compact sedans like the Tata Zest, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Honda Amaze and the Ford Figo Aspire. The Essentia will also go up against the newly launched Volkswagen Ameo
