Do the Americans have something to worry about?

  • BMW Motorrad could unveil the R18 at the upcoming EICMA.
  • The 1800cc air- and oil-cooled motor is the largest boxer engine to come out of Germany.
  • Expect the bike maker to take the wraps off a few more motorcycles at the event.
  • In May this year, BMW Motorrad showcased the concept R18 cruiser and confirmed that it would go into production as a 2020 model. Four months down the line, the production-ready R18 cruiser has been spotted ahead of the upcoming EICMA.

Lucky for us, the upcoming cruiser wasn’t covered in camouflage, so we were able to spot some details. Usually, production models tend to differ from their concept versions, but not this time. The production-spec R18 looks eerily similar to the concept model.

The upcoming cruiser is powered by a massive 1.8-litre, 2-cylinder boxer engine, which is the largest boxer-twin to be fitted in a BMW motorcycle. However, we don’t know the peak torque rating that this monster will churn out. But we are pretty sure it will be at par with its American counterparts to offer stiff competition.

The spy shots have also revealed that BMW has equipped the production-spec R18 with wide, chunky tyres to match its cruising character. The teardrop-shaped fuel tank seems to be similar to that of the concept model. Additionally, the German bike maker might be planning to equip the R18 with an ingenious anti-theft system. How does it work? Head here to find out.

Apart from unveiling this gigantic cruiser, the Germans also have something interesting planned in the form of three new models for us at the upcoming EICMA. If rumours are to be believed, BMW might be unveiling a sports tourer, a large capacity maxi-scooter, and a litre-class naked in a few weeks!
