BMW Motorrad Posts Sixth Consecutive Sales Record

The Bavarian bike maker recorded its highest ever sales in 2016, betting an even more aggressive performance for the next year

Registering highest ever sales in 2016, BMW Motorrad has achieved a new record with a total of 1,45,032 units supplied worldwide. The Bavarian manufacturer has shown 5.9 per cent sales hike when compared to 1,36,963 units sold in 2015. With 24,894 units sales, BMW’s home country of Germany remained its largest market, showing 4.5 percent gain, while the second best sales result was seen in the USA with 13,730 units.

Along with the other European countries, BMW Motorrad registered impressive growth in the Asian markets as well. Phenomenal sales figures were recorded in France (13,350 units), Italy (12,300 units), Spain (9,520 units) and the UK (8,782 units), totalling around 7.5 per cent increment in supply to customers in Europe, including Germany. In the Asian market, China and Thailand showed considerable growth with deliveries increased by 52.7 and 42.1 per cent respectively.

Commenting on this new milestone, Stephan Schaller, president, BMW Motorrad, said, “2016 was once again a highly successful year for BMW Motorrad. For the sixth time in succession, we have been able to set a new sales record. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to all our customers worldwide for the enormous trust they have placed in us. Over the last six years, BMW Motorrad has increased its deliveries to customers by around 50% (2010: 98,047 units / 2016: 145,032 units). We are well on the way to achieving our planned sales target of 200,000 vehicles in 2020.”

The company sold 12.1 per cent more enduro bikes in 2016, with the R 1200 GS and GS Adventure being the top-selling models, while the third spot was secured by the R 1200 RT classic tourer. Overall, the most popular BMW R series contributed over 53 per cent of the total sales. The sporty BMW S models also performed well in the market with a share of 16.3 per cent in the total sales. The supersport S 1000 RR registered sales of 9,016 units, while the adventure S 1000 XR stood just a step behind it with 8,835 units.

Looking ahead to 2017, BMW Motorrad is going to launch 14 new or revised models. Moreover, the company is also going to expand its presence in the under 500cc segment with its new G 310 GS, due to be launched in the second half of the year. According to the company, like the G 310 R does in the segment of BMW roadsters, the second model of the BMW G series transfers the hallmark features of the GS family. While the first G series model has already been announced in some markets like the US and the UK, its Indian launch is expected to take place in the next couple of months. On the other hand, the small adventure bike of the company can be expected to arrive to the subcontinent by the end of this year.
