The BMW G 310 R is among the most highly anticipated new bike launch for 2016. The bike made its debut at the 2015 EICMA motorcycle show last year in Italy and was showcased in front of the Indian audiences at the 2016 Auto Expo earlier this year. The biggest reason for the curiosity around the motorcycle is the fact that the G 310 R will hold the distinction of being the most affordable motorcycle to go on sale in the Indian two-wheeler market. The bike has been developed and designed by BMW Motorrad in Germany while the motorcycle will be manufactured by TVS Motors at its Hosur plant. This means the G 310 R will be priced aggressively and we can expect tit o retail for around Rs 2.2 and 2.5 lakh with a probable launch by October, 2016 in India. While two-wheeler enthusiasts were warming up for the launch of the G 310 R in the India market, Autocar has reported that an adventure version based on the bike is also in the offing. An adventure version of the BM G 310 R doesn’t seem to be a farfetched dream as the German brand is renowned for their rugged dual-purpose machines and the BMG GS series is the highest selling motorcycle in the European market. Given the road conditions in India, an adventure motorcycle bike with long travel suspension makes great sense and slowly the consumers are understanding the benefits of this genre of motorcycles. In the premium segment, Triumph Tiger sales have been impressive while the Royal Enfield Himalayan is a good option for bikers on a budget that want a rugged off-roader on two-wheels.
What should make the new BMW offering click will be the German bikemaker’s years of expertise in making dual-purpose machines and the fact that it will be a lighter and more refined machine than the RE Himalayan. We can expect the BMW G 310 GS to have the similar utilitarian design that is seen on the higher displacement machines. Powering the bike will be the same 313cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder motor as seen on the street bike producing 35PS of power and 28Nm of peak torque. The powerplant has been mated to a 6-speed gearbox. We can expect the BMW G 310 GS to be unveiled at the 2016 EICMA motorcycle show later this year with a probable global debut in early 2017.
