BMW offers a new range of 3 and 4-cylinder engines that will be powering the company's future models

BMW M performance Twin-turbo engine

Automobile manufacturers across the globe are trying to develop new engines which are smoother, economical and yet powerful enough to generate ample thrust. One of the few carmakers that has been successful in developing these kinds of engines is BMW. BMW recently announced its new range of engines (3 and 4-cylinders) that will be powering its future models, both petrol and diesel.

Compared to the existing BMW engines, the new ones boasts a reduction in CO2 emissions by 5 per cent and an average increase of power by 7PS, along with 20Nm of more torque. These new 4- cylinder engines will be offered with twin-scroll turbochargers (new to this segment), which was used earlier only in high-end diesel motors. Other changes that have been made include new pressure levels for fuel injection and new balancer shafts for the 3-cylinder motor so that the NVH levels are under control. The company has also introduced a new cylinder cooling system along with a new Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust treatment so that the NOX levels remain under control.

There is a long way to go for BMW till it equips its future cars with these new motors. However, the new engines will also be powering the 1-5 Series and models of its sister company the Mini. There has been no official statement on when these engines will reach the Indian markets, but the earliest that we can see these engines will be somewhere in late 2017, on the next 3-Series.
