Both were showcased at Bajaj’s dealership meet in Turkey, so their Indian launch is uncertain

Bajaj will be reviving its NS nameplate – the street fighter range – with two motorcycles, as suggested by the images that have surfaced on the internet. The pictures are of the NS 160, a brand new offering, and the discontinued NS 200. It is said that the bikes were snapped during Bajaj’s Turkey dealership meet where both of these were unveiled, which also hints at a launch in the near future. However, it is still not clear if the bikes will be launched in India.

Speaking of the bikes, you might be aware that the NS 200 was discontinued around mid-2016 to avoid cannibalisation of the AS 200, a semi-faired bike, with looks inclined towards a tourer. Well, with these spy images we can safely say that the NS 200 is making a comeback in the Indian motorcycling scene. The bike will feature several updates in terms of equipment, paint scheme and styling tweaks. On top of this, the most significant update will be the introduction of an electronic fuel-injection system as opposed to a carburetted unit found on the previous version.

The styling updates will include new paint options along with fresh body graphics to accentuate the bike’s sporty appeal. The bike will retain the same design as before with a mass-forward setup. The NS 200 FI will also retain the pressed steel perimeter frame chassis along with the 12-litre tank.

The NS 200 will, of course, be powered by the same 199.5cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled motor with 23.5PS of power and 18.3Nm of torque. The figure, although same as before, will be delivered more responsively, thanks to the fuel-injection system. Power will be sent via the 6-speed gearbox which might let the bike hit the 0-60kmph milestone in around 3.1 seconds.

Honestly, the name of the bike – NS 160 – seems a bit strange. As, unlike the NS 200 which shares the numeric part of its name with the AS200, the NS160 doesn’t use ‘150’ from the AS150. What this could essentially mean, is that the NS 160 has a big-bore motor as compared to the AS150’s 149.4cc. Or, it could just be a marketing strategy and someone in that department wanted the bike to be called as the NS 160 in order to target bikes like the Gixxer and the Hornet. Both of which use a motor bigger than 150cc, but less than 160cc.

Anyway, we assume that the bike will be powered by the same motor as the AS 150, with a 149.5cc, single-cylinder, oil-cooled unit. The unit produces 17PS of power and 13Nm of torque and power will be transferred via a 5-speed unit. Stopping power will be provided by 240mm front disc and a 130mm drum unit at the back.

The bike draws its design from the NS 200 and the underpinning of the AS 150 in terms of the frame, the rear swingarm, etc.
