Maruti's first sub 4-metre compact SUV has clocked the figure in less than a year!

Let this figure sink in a bit. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has been booked by two lakh people. Bookings for the compact SUV began (albeit unofficially) a little under a year ago. Simple maths will tell you that Maruti showrooms have accepted nearly 550 orders for the Brezza per day!

Maruti is evidently having a tough time battling the ever increasing demand. In fact, waiting periods for the Brezza have shot past the six-month mark in multiple areas. Begs the question, what's Maruti done right to pull this off?

1. Brand

To start with, Maruti is, well, Maruti. The name has unparalleled brand value in the Indian auto space. India's largest automaker also takes pride in the fact that it is homegrown. Moreover, it has been around for close to three and a half decades. Naturally, the brand invokes trust, which draws a whole load of customers to the showrooms. In spite of Maruti being among the last to enter the sub 4-metre SUV market, it managed to topple the segment stalwarts within a month of going on sale.

2. After Sales

Being around for 35 years also means Maruti boasts of the largest aftersales network in India. Officially, the brand has over three thousand service centres spread across 1547 cities in India. Since a Maruti is as easily found in India as chai, every mechanic worth his salt knows how to mend one. Also, since genuine spares are available over the counter, there's added peace of mind knowing no spurious parts make their way into the car. From day one, the Brezza had the safety net of this vast expanse of after sales support.

3. Reliability

The Vitara Brezza features just the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre diesel motor with 90PS / 200Nm on tap. Yes, one may ridicule Maruti Suzuki all he wants for plonking the same motor across practically every car they retail. However, that doesn't change the fact that the engine has proven its reliability over time. We know of the humble DDiS engine clocking lakhs of kilometres requiring nothing more than scheduled maintenance and a fresh serving of engine oil.

4. Pricing

The introductory pricing of Rs 6.99 lakh saw bookings shoot through the roof. Maruti Suzuki recorded a staggering 2600 orders within 24 hours of launch! The pricing of the compact SUV has been revised since, but it still manages to come across as a value for money offering with prices ranging between Rs 7.19 lakh and Rs 9.88 lakh.

5. Features / Styling

Just like its posh Nexa brethren, the Vitara Brezza is loaded to the gills with features. The top-spec ZDi+ variant gets a lengthy feature list that includes projector headlamps with daytime running lamps, 16-inch gunmetal grey alloy wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment with navigation, and a host of customisation options. Also, despite playing rather safe with the design, Maruti managed to make it rugged enough to click with the masses. The jacked up 200mm of ground clearance, the floating roof and the generous use of matte-black cladding gave the Brezza the much-needed SUV stance.
