Mitsubishi Motors India has declared the recall of 2,400 Cedia models because of an issue with the front passenger side airbag inflator. The recall is applicable to all Cedia models manufactured between 2006 and 2008. Due to the ongoing scandal with airbag supplier Takata Corporation, various cars of different make and models have been affected by the recall.
The problem refers to the airbag unit which contains a defective inflator and propellant device which in an event of a crash could cause the unit to deploy wrongly causing metal fragments to wound the occupants. The global campaign started by Mitsubishi will be carried out in India across all authorised dealerships. The faulty passenger side airbag will be replaced free of charge for all its respective customers, and the recall has already started from the 25th January, 2016. All concerned owners of Mitsubishi Cedias have been requested by the manufacturer to approach the nearest authorised dealership to understand the applicability of the recall.
Along with Mitsubishi, other car manufacturers are also affected due to the faulty Takata passenger side airbag, including auto majors from the Japanese and European market.
