It's good news for ADV enthusiasts as KTM polishes both the aesthetics and features!

The 2022 KTM 390 Adventure is finally here. Yes, the wait has been long, but the new features come bearing exciting off-road treats for adventure enthusiasts. So, with further adieu, let’s dive in.

Tell me, what’s new?
Three important bits, two of which involve the wheels. So, let’s begin there.
Out with the old six-spoke alloy rims and in with the new five-spoke design that KTM claims is stronger, more rugged and durable. Hence, if you’re looking at tackling some backyard trails, your mind should be at ease now. It also gets two stages of traction control (TC), one for the street and one for off-road. Now, you can select the TC intervention levels at the rear wheel and either keep it in check, or let it slip in a controlled fashion. Of course, you can still switch it off and give it the beans. That said, the new modes, we reckon, will encourage new riders to explore off-road riding a lot more now.

It’s got the attitude of an off-roader, might as well wear the look too, no? The 390 Adventure will now be offered in two new colours- KTM’s Factory Racing Blue and Dark Galvano Black. While the racing blue is an exciting new shade on the KTM the black looks pretty imposing.

Ok. So what hasn’t changed?
Engine:

For starters, the 373.27cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine retains its characteristics, especially as KTM has not tinkered with the motor in this round of updates. It still makes a healthy 43.5PS at 9,000rpm and 37Nm at 7,500rpm. That said, we wish KTM had altered the gear ratios to improve the 390 Adventure’s off-road manners.

Underpinnings & Features:
With no changes to the split-trellis frame, 43mm WP Apex USD front forks and rear monoshock, the 2022 model still retains flavour notes from the 2021 version. There is no change to the ground clearance which is still at 200mm and the kerb weight of 177kg is also here to stay for 2022. Even the braking hardware of a 320mm front disc and 230mm rear disc remain unchanged.

Similar is the story with the features on the new 390 Adventure. It still gets the split all-LED headlight and the TFT instrument console with Bluetooth connectivity. Even ride-by-wire and rider aids like riding modes and cornering ABS remain untouched.

Ok, how about the price, is it more expensive now?
Prices have inflated for 2022, but thankfully, it’s marginal. Priced at Rs 3,34,895 (ex-showroom Delhi), the 2022 model is only Rs 6,452 dearer than the 2021 model, but packs in fairly useful features that help justify the price hike.

Rivals
The KTM 390 Adventure is a potent adventure-tourer with decent off-road credibilities, but it still is a road-biased motorcycle. Hence, its closest and most direct rival is the BMW G 310 GS (Rs 3,05,000 ex-showroom).

If you’re looking for something more off-road friendly, then the Royal Enfield Himalayan (starting from Rs 2,14,519 ex-showroom) and Yezdi Adventure (starting from Rs 2,09,000 ex-showroom) are better equipped to tackle the rough stuff.

That said, we know that Royal Enfield has been working on a bigger and faster Himalayan 450 (expected at Rs 2.75 Lakh ex-showroom) which has been spotted on test runs. When that finally arrives, the broth should become more flavourful.
