  • The prototype retains strong character lines similar to the 10th-generation Accord.

  • It will bet big on driver-assistance and Honda Sensing safety technology.

  • A new all-digital instrument cluster and 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system will be in the mix.

  • Honda hasn’t revealed any information regarding the engine options yet.

  • In India, the Honda Civic rivals the Hyundai Elantra and Skoda Octavia.

Honda has confirmed the development of the next-generation Civic by unveiling a prototype that showcases all the design changes. The next-gen Civic prototype carries significant design changes to both the interior and exterior, added features and safety tech, and a bunch of cool new funky colour options.

The Honda Civic has been in existence since 1973. The new-gen model pays tribute to the Civics of the yore. It sits low, looks sporty  and features strong lines running along its profile. It gets a completely reworked front fascia with a blacked out grille and a gaping air dam. It gets sharper LED headlights up front and larger split tail lights setup. The back also features a sweeping boot that gets a spoiler-eque finish along with twin exhaust pipes.

Inside, the Civic prototype gets a minimalistic design and a Honda e EV-like interior that gets a honeycomb mesh running along the dash. The front roof pillars have also been pulled back to improve the driver’s view out the cockpit. Feature highlights include a digital instrument cluster and a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Honda has not shared any details regarding the upgrade in safety features, but it does promise multiple new active and passive safety features. The safety suite of Honda Sensing and multiple airbags will also be available.

At the end of the day, this is just a prototype and we will have to wait until next year to see the production-spec model that first goes on sale in North America. The Civic will be offered in sedan and hatchback forms, with the Si and Type R models also being retained for the next generation. Honda brought back the Civic in its 10th generation to India in 2018, priced from Rs 17.93 lakh to Rs 22.34 lakh (ex-showroom). So expect the new generation model to launch here no sooner than 2022 or 2023. It goes up against the likes of the Skoda Octavia and Hyundai Elantra.
