The luxury barge will debut by the second half of 2020

  • Expected to launch in India soon after its global debut.
  • Both the exterior and the interior get a major overhaul.
  • Hybrid powertrain expected to join the lineup.
  • Key rivals are the Audi R8 and the BMW 7 Series.

The last time we heard about the new S-Class was when we got hold of a couple of leaked images that revealed how the sedan looks and also gave us an idea of what to expect. Not long after that, Mercedes-Benz has officially teased the luxury sedan and also announced that it will debut by the second half of 2020.

The W 223 S-Class is a much-awaited model as it is the quintessential luxury sedan out of the trio from Germany. The new sedan gets a major design revamp with sharper styling, in tune with Mercedes’ modern design language. Now, everyone is not in accord with the three-pointed star’s recent designs and the leaked S-Class image also gave us a similar vibe. But we shall reserve our comments until we see the actual version. That said, the latest leak reveals the front end which sees a generous use of chrome, a bigger grille, and slim headlamps.

We also know the rear will feature wraparound tail lamps which are sleeker than before. We are huge fans of the classy W 222. Initial impressions of the new S-Class’ styling is a mixed bag and we do hope it strikes the right balance. From the numerous leaks, we know the cabin now gets two massive screens, new steering wheel, and rectangular air-con vents. Again, we were huge fans of the W 222 S-Class’ cabin as it perfectly fused old-school design with modern bits. So it certainly has big shoes to fill.

The powertrain options for the new S-Class are still under wraps. But, rumour mills suggest a set of petrol and diesel engines along with a hybrid powertrain. Serious AMG versions will follow with explosive firepower from turbocharged V8s. The ultra-luxurious Maybach edition will also join the lineup after the global debut.
