The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class has received two new powertrains: a plug-in hybrid (S580e) and V8 (S580). Both these new flagship variants join the existing 3-litre petrol and diesel mild-hybrid options and can be had with either in standard or long wheelbase guise. Also, new optional features are offered in the S-Class that can be added by paying a premium.

S580e Hybrid

The S-Class plug-in hybrid pairs a 367PS/500Nm 3-litre in-line six petrol engine and a 150PS/480Nm electric motor to develop a combined output of 510PS and 750Nm.

The PHEV luxury sedan can be driven in pure electric power for over 100km as per the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP). The healthy output from the electric motor means the S-Class PHEV can go up to 140kmph in pure EV mode. In fact, performance is brisk, with the S580e doing the 0-100kmph sprint in 5.2 seconds. Top speed is capped at 250kmph.

When the time comes to charge the battery, the S can be topped via a 11kW home charger (provided as standard) or a 60kW fast charger. Topping up with the latter means it takes just 30 minutes to charge the battery from zero to 100 percent.

If it’s performance over green credentials that you’re looking for, the S580 should be on top of your list. It comes with a 503PS/700Nm 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that is assisted by a 48v mild-hybrid tech. Power is delivered to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.

As a result, the S-Class V8 does the 0-100kmph in just 4.4 seconds, mighty impressive for a luxury barge! Keep the throttle pinned and it will hit an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph, which is the same as the hybrid.
