He will start the race from a lowly 11th but the record is definitely under threat

Marc Marquez is truly an exceptional talent. The Spaniard has already won 55 Grand Prix, is a 8-time World Champion and is breaking records almost every weekend he races. Last weekend at Phillip Island, Marquez surpassed Aussie legend Mick Doohan’s win tally of 54 races in the premiere class, moving up to third in the all-time list. And this weekend the record that is next on his radar is teammate Jorge Lorenzo’s 383 points total from 2010.

Coming into the 2019 Sepang GP, the last round of the triple header series, Marquez has amassed 375 points in 17 races. He has won five the last five races in a row; winning at Misano, Thailand and recently at Phillip Island with last lap overtaking manoeuvres on his fellow challengers. These battles were close encounters but on numerous occasions, Marquez has simply been unstoppable. Throughout the season, Marquez has not finished lower than second position, barring his only DNF in Austin.

So what does Marquez need to do in order to secure the record tomorrow at the Malaysian Grand Prix? For starters, he has to carve through the field as a crash in qualifying means he starts eleventh. However, that should not be a problem for him. He just needs to climb as high as seventh to secure the record. However, this is Marquez that we are talking about. He will want to dispatch off the struggling Ducatis quickly so as to get on the tail of the Yamahas who have locked out the front row. Will Marquez clinch another record? Come the end of the season, could he also become the first person to earn 400 points? All of these will be answered in a couple of week’s time.
