The next-gen CR-V could get the 5+2 seat layout and also a turbocharged motor for the first time

Honda’s popular SUV, the CR-V, has been spied testing in the Mojave desert (USA) in its upcoming 2018 avatar. The Japanese manufacturer is clearly undertaking hot-weather testing on the car, which is important in order to check the behaviour of the engine and the cabin in such a climate. The all-new CR-V is expected to boast of more space compared to the current version and is also likely to get a turbocharged petrol engine for the first time.

From the spy shots, the car looks brawnier and appears to have grown in size. In the front grille and headlamp set-up, the car seems to be more in line with current Honda cars such as the Ridgeline and even the new Civic. Then there are the SUV-esque features such as the stubby front end, all-around black plastic cladding, prominent wheel arches, raked rear windscreen, etc. One can also notice projector headlamps peeping out from behind the camouflaged skin, while at the back the signature C-shaped tail lamps are also evident. A few more styling bits are visible, such as the shark-fin antenna on the roof, a rear spoiler, and the exposed tailpipe.

The increased size of the car will mean more spacious interiors and, if rumours are to be believed, an extra pair of seats for the last row. The car is expected to gain size in terms of wheelbase, height, width and overall length.

The power sources would be the most interesting upgrade in the upcoming CR-V, with the introduction of a 1.5-litre turbocharged motor. The same motor is available in America with the tenth-generation Civic, and produces a healthy 176PS of power, which, though lower than the current engine’s power (187PS), will deliver the figure in a much more efficient way. Moreover, Honda could also introduce a hybrid powertrain to further enhance its appeal. The car will carry forward the drive configuration of the current CR-V; that is, it will be available in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive layouts.

The car is expected to make its US debut in the second half of 2017, but its showcase could take place much earlier. However, if the manufacturer plans to launch the car in India, it would only happen in 2018, since Honda might want to figure out a diesel option for the country. The reason being, Hyundai will be launching the Tucson this year with a diesel engine option, which is sure to attract a lot more buyers than the current CR-V does with its petrol motor. And since the CR-V still has a respectable image in the eyes of Indian buyers, Honda wouldn't want to lose that advantage to the Tucson. Just for the record, the Tucson is one of the biggest competitors of the CR-V in the States.
