UPDATE: Everything you need to know about the 2018 Maruti Swift

A couple of weeks ago, the 2107 Suzuki Swift broke cover when a spy image of the production-ready car surfaced on the Internet. Now, in another array of spy shots, the Japanese brochure of this third-gen Swift has been leaked. We were impressed with the way the all-new Swift maintained the same contour as the current generation but still managed to look quite different. And with the details out, we are further intrigued by the upcoming hatchback. And in case your Japanese is a little rusty, we have decoded all the information right here.

Mechanically, there is a surprise in store. The next-gen Swift gets the 1.0-litre BoosterJet turbo petrol engine, which will soon be introduced in the country with the BalenoRS. Other than this, there is also a 1.2-litre Dualjet engine mated to the mild-hybrid tech (SHVS) for the international models. For India, though, Maruti will continue to use the same lineup - 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel. These engines are also used in the Baleno and the upcoming hatchback - Ignis. The 1.0-litre Bossterjet engine is making its debut in India on the Baleno RS so hopefully we could get to see the Swift RS on our roads in the near future as well (fingers crossed).

In terms of the design, the biggest change is the new hexagonal grille. The next in line of changes are the new swept-back headlamps which could feature LED projector headlamps (like the Ignis). The rear of the hatchback features curvy, wrap-around taillamps and the rear fog lamp is placed at the centre of the bumper. What has remained unchanged though is the floating roof, which now becomes more prominent with the black strip on the C-pillar and houses the rear door handles.

Inside the Swift is an all-new cabin, dashboard and controls. To start with, it features a new and sporty twin-pod instrument cluster with red lights and driver info screen, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a new Smartphone Linkage Display Audio (SLDA) that supports both Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto. This system will also be available in the Ignis. Also, the all-new Swift will most likely be the third car to be based on Suzuki’s new platform, following in the Baleno’s footsteps. This means that the Swift will be lighter and stiffer.

With all this and more, the Swift looks like a serious contender for the next-gen hatchback in the country. With its Japanese debut a few weeks away, the international debut is most likely to happen at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show in March. For India, it will take at least another six to eight months before this car arrives on our shores. Ironically, the new Dzire might be launched sooner than the Swift itself.
